Making sport and physical activity a part of everyday life!

Update from Cornwall Sports Partnership Director Mike Thomas

Cornwall Sports Partnership

CSPs are evolving to be able to tackle at a local level the national challenge of inactivity. With just over a quarter of our population doing less than 30 minutes of activity per week, it's clear we have a major problem.

Our exact new role in reducing inactivity is still being finalised with Sport England our major funder, though it is clear that there will be a distinct focus on people and the place we live in, as well as developing a much wider range of relationships.

Physical activity and sport will remain at the heart of what we do and we will seek to have a positive impact on important outcomes of physical and mental wellbeing, individual development, social and community development and economic development.

Over 200 people swap the office for the beach!

Perranporth Beach was turned into a hub of sporting competition as the annual Cornwall Beach Games took place.

Held on Friday 19th May, 17 teams from businesses across Cornwall came together to compete in a series of sporting activities such as Volleyball, Netball, Rounder’s, Beach Clean, Team Building Skills, Tug of War, plus the ‘world famous’ Sandcastle Building Competition.

This event forms part of the Workplace Health Programme, created to help increase physical activity levels in the workplace and improve the health of employees, reduce sickness absence and increase productivity.

Cornwall Sports Partnership

The conference held on Tuesday 23rd May at the Knowledge Spa in Truro, aims to raise awareness of the impact of suicide on the population of Cornwall & Isles of Scilly.

Tim Marrion from Cornwall Sports Partnership delivered a workshop to delegates where they agreed the important role sport and physical activity can play to improve mental health in Cornwall.

Tim Marrion commented ‘It is great to be part of these conferences and showcase the work we do to demonstrate the power of sport and physical activity, it is such an important issue and if we can help just one person to talk about their mental health problems then it is worth it’
